ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 explores the significance of quality television, and that of situation comedy, in defining Nurse Jackie’s cultural meaning. Specifically framing the notion of postmodernity, and the context of the America Dream, concepts of parody and family identity are framed. The significance of an opiate addiction epidemic in the United States is examined, considering the potential of quality television to address these issues. Whilst framing the notion of the absent and unstable mother, this chapter also offers close textual analysis on Jackie Peyton’s interaction with family. At the same time, this chapter places into context a political vision, with regards to an exploration of the addict’s life.
