ABSTRACT
The beginning of a film an audience is primed and attentive—that is, assuming they haven't been worn out by the avalanche of television-style advertising that has infiltrated motion picture theaters in recent years. At the start of the film a viewer watches and listens, attentive to the rules and values of this new world he has entered. The ending will have a direct relationship to issues raised at the beginning of the film, as they relate to genre. Through editing and the use of simple visual effects it was possible to alter the film's outcome. This enchanting ending, elegantly tempered by the darker, more serious tone that the director brought to the film, added a crucial extra beat, fulfilling the audience's expectations and the story's promise. Ultimately, the filmmakers ended up rewriting, reshooting, and reediting a new ending, one that embodied the visual power of cinema rather than relying on the written and spoken word.
