ABSTRACT

The land itself, i.e. the soil, is distinguished from the usus, the use to which the soil may be put. In each ‘town’ the land itself is considered to be owned by the lagoon god or gods of the autochthonous Kpesi, whose wulomo is sitse or landlord. As these gods also own the lagoons, both farming and fishing are forbidden on the day of the week sacred to each particular god. The situation in Accra, however, appears to be more complicated and will be described separately.
