ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is divided into three parts: planning; delivery; and leadership and management. Computing as a subject can be defined as a combination of three separate strands: computer science, information technology (IT) and digital literacy (DL). The new computing curriculum was informed and influenced by several key parties: the Computing At School (CAS) group, Google's executive chairman Eric Schmidt and The Royal Society. These new programs of study have a much stronger emphasis on computer science as a rigorous subject discipline which should be studied by all students at primary and secondary levels. The book helps both teachers and heads of department, and at the same it encourages others to reflect on their practices and share their experiences of teaching computing. It focuses on the programs of study at a few stages in the secondary curriculum.
