ABSTRACT

This chapter covers some research-based strategies that all teachers should know about and adopt. The first strategy worth considering is the lesson question. The lesson plan was structured around four phases; this is based around the Accelerated Learning Cycle popularised by Alistair Smith. The chapter discusses how this four-part structure can be used to plan computing lessons. It explains fundamental part of a computing classroom's culture. A consistent four-part lesson cycle allows for structured learning through the previewing of content, modelling, independent practice and review. Every lesson should be planned with two things in mind: students' prior knowledge and the desired end point. Lesson planning is likely to have the greatest impact on teaching and learning. For some years there will be a mismatch between a teacher's subject content knowledge and their pedagogical content knowledge. A teaching assistant (TA) is a highly skilled practitioner who specialises in supporting students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
