ABSTRACT

How the FBI’s attention is drawn to an individual suspect is taken up in the first section of the chapter, followed by a description of the stages through which an FBI investigation may go through, including a list of the investigative techniques associated with each stage. The remaining sections examine the law bearing on each of those investigative techniques – the collection of public information, human intelligence, accessing stored information (e.g., the use of National Security Letters), the assistance of the National Security Agency, physical searches, real time surveillance including wiretapping, GPS and cell phone tracking.
