ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces you to the psychological research and theories of memory and imagination. It begins by considering what memory is, why it is important and discussing some findings from early studies on memory. The chapter describes some of the structures and processes of memory and different theoretical approaches to it. It discusses the some practical applications of memory research that may be useful in a variety of educational settings. The chapter identifies the ways people can use memory research, and people memories of past experiences, to help ourselves and others to improve their memory and future learning. Short-term memory is a memory store which is limited in both the duration and capacity of what it can retain. The chapter explores the proposal that there are different long-term memory systems for memories of different types of experience. It provides you with a greater understanding of memory theory and research by exploring the ways in which perspectives on memory have changed.
