ABSTRACT

This chapter zeroes in on English language instruction with suggestions for classroom practices based on the findings of the study. That is, in order to prepare students who are learning English to be successful language users in the contemporary globalized world, English language classrooms should aim to help learners become cognizant of and gain expertise in the multifarious ways in which English is spoken and used, gain exposure to and engagement in a breadth of English input, and have the opportunity to participate in communities of practice of English speakers. To that end, this chapter calls for changes in methods and content of English language classrooms, which include activities that raise awareness of the plurality of English, translanguaging, access to large quantities of English input and written texts through extensive reading, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), and authentic English experiences. The chapter ends with a conclusion to the book, which urges for steps to be taken to directly address impediments to language learning, including exposing language ideologies related to English, identifying and investing in effective English teaching and learning, and ultimately making concrete strides to meet the needs of English language learners today.
