ABSTRACT

We le© the case study of the small manufacturing company which began in Chapter 3 with their analysis of the core issues a ecting performance, so now is the time to bring the story up to date. First, let’s introduce the company in more detail. ‘ey are rated as one of the top ‹ve in the world for the manufacture of photo chemically machined (PCM) precision metal components. ‘ey currently manufacture 500 million components per annum and process some 25+ tons of metal per week. ‘ey employ around 190 people over two sites and have a turnover of £ 12 M. ‘e company was established in the 1960s and uses a range of processes such as photoetching/photo chemical machining, laser evolved etching process and laser evolved electro-forming (LEEP & LEEF), wire electrical discharge machining (EDM), three-dimensional precision components (3DPC) (bending/forming), and ‹nally ‹nishing and plating. ‘e key industry sectors include electronics, aerospace and military, medical, communications, automotive, precision engineering, and energy. ‘e company has a strategy of ‹nding a competitive advantage through speed of supply by fast and robust delivery schedules and using strategic internal material stocks. ‘ey have a comprehensive manufacturing capability, being able to supply custom solutions coupled with a unique technology o ering to clients. ‘ey have considerable volume versatility, the range being from one to one million.
