ABSTRACT

Changing from the maintenance era to the post-maintenance era requires a paradigm shiª and substantial e¢ort. Œe early cases of transformation from the maintenance era to the post-maintenance era took years to complete. Œese implementations were not smooth for three major reasons. First, the new equipment management approach was experimental, with no prior success examples. Second, it was a result of the increasing complexity of equipment issues and environmental changes. Œerefore, during implementation, management was not able to focus solely on making changes and had to divide e¢orts to deal with the inherited problems from the functional maintenance approach. Finally, the changes were mostly initiated by the maintenance managers because of a long struggle with the perceived ownership but lack of total control of equipment. Obviously, the maintenance department had less power to make corporate changes as an overhead functional group. Managers have been through a long process of expanding the department charter by seizing upstream opportunities in equipment introduction and development. It had been a slow journey with consistent e¢orts in persuading upper management and management of other groups that previously owned equipment introduction and development. Based on reviewing the actions that have been taken in the pioneer cases, this chapter introduces a new transformation and implementation approach that will provide a better and quicker process to take an organization from the maintenance functional setup to the platform ownership setup in the post-maintenance era.
