ABSTRACT

One of the most prevalent myths in manufacturing is the mistaken belief that existing measurement devices need to be periodically replaced with devices that are advertised as having better accuracy and improved resolution when compared to the older, existing model. This particular myth is especially insidious because the selection and purchase of the wrong measurement device can have far-reaching implications with respect to the competitiveness of a manufacturing facility. And, as a practical matter the act of measuring the output of a manufacturing process is a process unto itself of which the measurement device is only a part and probably not the most important part. Finally, I would add that just like any other process, the measurement process will be affected by variation.
