ABSTRACT
This chapter describes a particular manufacturing process known in Japanese as kisage work and in the West as hand scraping. It is a way of making very precise flat surfaces. It is extremely skillful work, and it is a very difficult technology to transfer, including to hand down the required skill to successors. It requires not only a high practical level of manual skill but also good judgment. Particularly the good judgment is difficult to transfer.
