ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of the book. This book provides an overview of those in teacher education and focuses on early years training courses as well as existing practitioners with a deeper understanding of the mathematical knowledge and skills which underpin children's progression and development at such a vital stage in their life. It explores what is meant by the pedagogy of early mathematical awareness and how young children make sense of what can be seen as a very abstract subject. Using the outdoors as a rich environment for planning quality experiences, the book seeks to combine how young children learn best with the potential for meaningful mathematical learning opportunities. It identifies meaningful contexts for learning which will help to motivate children in leading their own mathematical learning, thinking, talking and recording.
