ABSTRACT

Wholly agreeing with these maxims, the genteel female

shrank from the mere thought of equality and pursued her ac-

customed ways. The hand that rocked the cradle did not stray

from its appointed task; no general exodus took place from

the home into the world of men. No new firebrand appeared to

challenge the old assumptions or threaten the settled habits

of family life. The insistence on sphere therefore subsided,

and the new century reached its quarter mark with the tradi-

tional code still officially in force.
