ABSTRACT

The aim of this introductory chapter is to reveal features of my self-understanding as illuminated through the selection of readings that follow. I seek to explain and justify why I have chosen to present these in a linear rather than thematic fashion since I uncover both content and method in my exegesis. It situates my work within my professional life history as well as in relation to extant writings on theory and practice where they connect to an insight of ‘praxis’, being a term concerned with moral human action in education. It has required both a reflective and reflexive authorial voice as I establish the contents within a complex cultural and theoretical context that lays bare the strengths and weaknesses of my ongoing academic and personal development. It is designed to contribute to the understanding of the readers should they progress through each piece, one after the other. Embedded in the chapter is an ongoing analysis of the distinction between professional practice and praxis and the manner in which the latter is perceived as desirable as it has related to both the form and content of each selection.
