ABSTRACT

This chapter provides detailed information about evidence-based programs that integrate the arts in a variety of settings, including after-school programs, artist in residencies, and community sites, and demonstrates the positive impact the arts can make for disadvantaged youth. Troubled by the disparity in educational outcomes between homeless youth and their stably housed peers, the organizational founders of Homeless Children’s Education Fund (HCEF) were motivated to raise awareness to establish support for this underserved population. Inspired by research that demonstrates the positive impact of arts training on cognitive development, HCEF collaborates with local artists to develop highly engaging art programs for youth who reside in homeless housing agencies throughout Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Other programs discussed are: A reason to survive (ARTS), Art Start, and SchoolHouse Connection. The National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) through advocacy, community partnerships, and education ensures that children and youth experiencing homelessness received equitable and excellent services through the public schools across the country. NAEHCY connects educators, parents, advocates, researchers, and service providers to ensure school enrollment, attendance, and overall success for children and youth whose lives have been disrupted by the lack of safe, permanent, and adequate housing.
