ABSTRACT
This chapter defines alternative school programs, describes various models of programs, and suggests characteristics of successful programs. It identifies the needs of the at-risk students who are served in alternative programs and how these programs meet those needs within a positive school climate. It also explains the importance of art education as a critical component in the schools and reviews alternative programs that promote art as a means to reach students.
