ABSTRACT

In today’s art classroom, students have diverse and multi-faceted needs, including mental illness, which may manifest itself in a number of ways in schools and in the community. There is a stigma attached to mental illness that needs to be overcome; teachers are urged to expand their knowledge of mental illness. This chapter provides an overview of the challenges that one in five children face and focuses on how those mental health problems impact students within the classroom. Warning signs that alert teachers that children may need professional help are given and youth suicide is discussed.
