ABSTRACT

Students’ community is beginning to receive survivors of Hurricane Katrina. It is likely that many of the schools will be providing care and education to students and families from the disaster area. The catastrophic conditions many of these children and families have experienced are truly horrific. Most students will be registered in the schools as “homeless”. They may be entering new schools without documentation such as birth certificates or immunization information. In these cases, consistent with the McKinney Act, school policies and practices must assist homeless students to enter schools without delay. Media coverage of the horrific events brought on by the hurricane and its aftermath has touched many adults and children. School/District Letter head September 9, 2005 Dear Parents/Guardians, the children have been exposed to images, news and information about the disaster along the Gulf Coast. When children are exposed, particularly to images of events such as Hurricane Katrina, they can be particularly vulnerable.
