ABSTRACT

Both authors have significant experience responding to crises involving children. The following case study is a look through two lenses: Lomas takes the lens of a professor of counseling and former school counselor in Houston, Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Denino takes the lens of a mental health responder with the American Red Cross, stationed at two shelters in Mississippi. This example illustrates the importance of meeting basic needs first, and that the role of a crisis worker is not always focused on counseling.
