ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies a number of 'spaces' or dimension that differentiates biosphere reserves (BRs) and the variety of organisational solutions that can be consistent with social regeneration and natural 'justice'. It explores the practice-based approach applied on a number of BRs. The chapter offers illustrations from BRs in Vietnam, Italy, Australia, and Zimbabwe and explains the nature of BRs as defined by UNESCO. It suggests that the Communal Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources model needs to be revised to ensure community benefit, increased accountability, and ownership if the aims of the BR are to be assured. BRs have been designated by UNESCO since the 1970s and are located across the globe. The UNESCO Man and Biosphere approach provides a framework and rationale for creating itineraries of awareness and endogenous development across communities. The chapter concludes with the analysis by considering social regeneration within UNESCO designated BRs and by combining social regeneration with natural justice.
