ABSTRACT

The aims of this chapter are threefold. First of all, we seek to document the scale of green spaces in Paris, to survey the different categories of vegetation in a large city and to look at these issues over a long chronological period. Secondly, the chapter draws on the new Digital Urban History: it is an attempt to write the history of Paris in the age of the ICT Revolution.1 For that we will use different digital resources rather easily available today but not often used by historians. Finally, we will employ software and especially Geographical Information System (GIS) tools to cope with the data. Some methodological points will need to be explained, indicating how, arguably, the skills of the historian have to be modified to integrate his or her work with the ICT Revolution.2
