Redesigning Emergency Department Flows: Case Study

Redesigning patient flows in the Flinders Medical Centre Emergency Department was where our Process Redesign journey started. Many of the most important things we learned about Process Redesign had their roots in the work in the Emergency Department. The Emergency Department Redesign also demonstrated that striking improvements can be made simply by changing the design of patient flows. While the redesigned flows described here represented a major break from Australian Emergency Department practices at that time, the models we developed (King et al. 2006) have subsequently been widely adopted by Emergency Departments across Australia and elsewhere. What is important in this, as in the other case reports, is not the specifics of what we did. The case reports are included to give a feel of how Process Redesign for Healthcare using Lean Thinking works in practice. What is important are the principles involved and the methods by which they were implemented.
