ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book is grounded in Johan Galtung's theory of positive peace. To do justice to the transformative potential of positive peace, it argues that schools need to grapple with these significant structural and cultural issues, while recognising that they have their origins beyond the school gates. The book talks about where iPEACE model for positive peace has come from. Peacekeeping refers to the deployment of national or multinational forces for the purpose of helping to control and resolve an actual or potential armed conflict between or within states. It generally includes measures to address conflicts in progress and usually involves diplomatic action to bring hostile parties to a negotiated agreement. Peacebuilding aims to reduce the risk of lapsing or relapsing into conflict by strengthening national capacities at all levels for conflict management, and to lay the foundation for sustainable peace and development.
