ABSTRACT

The concluding chapter reflects on how the Labour Church has been redefined throughout the book as the movement of Theological Socialism. The implication of understanding the Labour Church movement in terms of its core message is that the British Labour scene of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries needs to be re-considered through a theological lens, because from that perspective we discover the religious significance of Socialism and the Labour movement for many contemporary activists. The Religion of Socialism, which was institutionalised within the Labour Church in a literal form as Theological Socialism, expresses a long lasting tradition of belief. Rather than a late-Victorian curio, the Labour Church acts as a signpost to the continuous theological imperative within the British and international Labour movements which means that Labour history can be read as religious history.
