ABSTRACT

The name Lunda is widely used in the Katanga and Kwango Provinces of the Belgian Congo and adjacent areas in Northern Rhodesia to refer to peoples originally part of the empire of the Lunda of Mvata Yamvo. (D There are three groups of Lunda: - the Northern group ruled by the original Mvata Yamvo dynasty in Kapanga Territory; the Eastern group in the Luapula valley and North-eastern Rhodesia, and the Southern group of south-west Katanga Province and contiguous territory in North-western Rhodesia and Angola. There is little available information on the Northern Lunda(2) today, in spite of a wealth of historical material. TTie Eastern Lunda are dealt with in another section of the Ethnographic»Survey. Oily the Southern Lunda, who include the Ndembu, are here described. Northern and Southern Lunda are frequently confused; they are however distinct both linguistically and culturally, although the boundary between their respective territories has not been clearly defined.
