ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the fundamentals of hard and soft ‘key light’, which is the main light on a subject. It then looks at how lighting ratios are used to describe the difference between the light levels of the brighter and darker ‘fill’ side of the subject and when and how ‘flat’ light which is of even brightness can be used creatively. Understanding the reasons to measure light levels leads on to a thorough account of how to read use incident and spot light meters as well as waveforms and vectorscopes to measure and monitor light. This then leads into looking at a range of techniques for exposing the shot and guidance on which is appropriate when.
