ABSTRACT

This chapter starts by looking at methods to control the direction intensity softness and color of light in order to affect how it wraps around and ‘models’ a subject. It then looks at ways of breaking light up and controlling where it does and doesn’t fall to affect the mood, atmosphere and guide the viewer’s eye. It shows which lamps to choose to emulate what sources and how to soften or sharpen light and use it creatively to enhance reflections or refraction. The chapter concludes with a detailed look at the four main types of light sources used in film lamps and the uses and benefits of different types of lamp housings.
