ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the photographic foundation for cinematography. It starts by looking at the camera sensor’s dynamic range and bit depth that affect the range of brightnesses and colors that are recorded. It then looks at recording choices RAW, Log and LUT and how and when to use them. Next aperture, shutter speed, ISO and metering, which all affect exposure decisions, depth of field and movement blur are explored. The chapter also looks at lenses, focal length, and how flare, polarization, white balance and black balance affect the image. It finishes by considering how and when to adjust settings to allow you to shoot in almost any situation.
