ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at combining shots into scenes. It starts by looking at how genre storytelling can reinforce or break stereotypes, and how concepts from film analysis and theory can inform film production. It then looks at techniques for effective collaboration with the director. There is an in-depth exploration of ‘blocking the scene’; to choose shot sizes and angles that convey the story and control the pace whilst providing ‘coverage’ to ensure the editor can cut the scene. It shows how the line is used to make sure people stay on the same side of the screen and how to shoot efficiently. The chapter then looks at combining several shots in one developing shot and how different types of movement affect the meaning of shots and how movement can be used to combine shots.
