ABSTRACT
The Inca Empire ruled much of the western portion of the South American continent from the early 1400s ce until it fell to the Spanish in 1536. However, the Inca were not the first complex society to rise in this beautiful but formidable landscape of mountains, valleys, and coast. A host of polities and states preceded the rise of the Inca Empire.
