ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the process of cognitization of the capital–labor nexus and that of financialization through a critical revision of Ulrich Beck's concept of definition power. It discusses notions such as carbon trading dogma and Just Transition (JT) in order to set the stage for a critical analysis of the highly significant South African One Million Climate Jobs (OMCJ) campaign. The carbon trading dogma is not an unassailable fortress, a struggle-proof monolithic entity. Rather, it is the expression of the 'green' elites' hegemony over global warming policy – a hegemony constantly put to question by various instances of the global climate justice (CJ) movement. The basic claim of OMCJ is almost self-evident: by shifting crucial productive activities from a fossil fuel-based model to a low-carbon scheme it is possible to create at least one million new jobs. Such jobs must be, and this is a fundamental element, both decent and people-driven.
