Tribal and tribal-type communities of the Southern Sotho no longer stand out clearly in the modem socio-cultural context. This may be one of the reasons why they have been given so little attention during the present century.1 As exceptions to this general neglect, the Tlokoa of Lelingoana and the Phuthi have both been ethnographically described.2
