ABSTRACT

The recent economic downturn has hit Finland hard. Young people have been especially affected, as youth unemployment is currently over 20%. This increasing uncertainty about the future might be expected negatively to affect young people’s academic engagement and motivation towards their future careers. However, in this chapter we also expected to find some degree of polarization, with some young people thriving, and others disengaging. Our results will provide new insights into the impact of the recession on ways in which young people navigate the transition to further education and employment.
