ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how the town becomes an inescapable scenario where ghosts from the past irrupt page after page, making it impossible for the main character to leave. It provides a general context of the Revolution, in order to explain how Rulfo made use of the Gothic to express his concerns about the situation in his country after the years of armed conflict. The chapter proposes that Pedro represents the ruling groups in Mexico that have replaced each other with the installment of every new regime. It reviews the fragmented structure in Pedro Paramo. It emphasizes that Comala is a claustrophobic prison where the past is permanently haunting Juan Preciado's present, in the form of the ghosts of those who lived in the town in the times of Pedro Paramo. The chapter describes and explores the role the characters play as Juan confronts them. It gives view of Mexico's reality after the Revolution through these characters.
