ABSTRACT

Ingassana: also spelt Ingessana, Engassana, said to mean “ thankless ones/' is the name given by the Arabs to a group of hill peoples who have no common name for themselves, each section calling itself by a different name, generally taken from the hill it inhabits, preceded by the word jokf “ people.” The people of Tau near Soda call themselves Jok Tau; those of Badali, Jok Kuthulok; those of Kukur, Jok Gor; there is also a section called Jok Buruk.1 The people of Jebel Ulu call the Ingassana Metabi, those of Jebel Mughaja call them Mamidza, and the Jumjum, Muntabi.2
