ABSTRACT

There is another, and anthropologically better known, society in Kenya called the Meru, but the Tanzania Meru are in no way related to the Kenya Meru. No one has yet satisfactorily explained how the Varwa became known as the Meru. One suggestion is that since early German missionary writings (EvangeZisch-Lutherisches Missionsbtatt,l896-l938) gave Varwa as Waroo, this became Anglicized to Meru. Although the Meru refer to themselves as Varwa, all other people in Tanzania know them by the name Meru.
