Thetableshowsthenumberofchiefdomsinwhicheachtribeformedthelargest singleelementinthepopulationin1948,anditincludesanestimateoftheareaof thetribalterritoriesthusdefined.29Inafewcases,chiefdomscouldbedifferently classifiedaccordingtoothercriteria.Thus,threeofthechiefdomsclassedhereas NyamweziareadministrativelyinthesouthoftheLakeRegionandformpartofthe SukumalandFederation.Thefiguresgivenforthesizeoftribalterritoriesshouldbe readwithcaution,sincethereareimportantdifferencesbetweenthepopulation densitiesofdifferentareas.30
