AftertheimpositionofpeaceontheregionbytheGermans,theneedforsuch defensiveunitswasnolongerfelt.AtleastinUnyamweziproper,however,thepresentpatternofscatteredsettlementdidnotimmediatelyemerge.Itwasprecededby aperiodinwhichpeoplestillcontinuedtoliveclosetogether,butinrathersmaller numbers.Theheadsofthesenew,smallersettlementswerecommonlythemenwho foundedthem.Thesewereknownasmzengakaya(literally"thebuilderofthehomestead"),atitlenowadaysusedofthelowestrankofvillageheadmaninsomeareas. Suchasettlementmightcontainasmanyasadozenhouseholdheadsandtheirdependants.Thesehouseholdheadsweresometimes,butbynomeansalways,relatedto eachotherandthesettlementhead.Thesettlementwasoftensurroundedbyafence orhedge,beyondwhichlaythemembers'fields.191
