ABSTRACT

Theoretical engagement can hesitate in such a context, for fear of encountering contempt. Narcissus follows the trajectory of humanization in reverse – a trajectory which will claim to have abolished the image, and to have put an end to that decorporealization of the body which signals the advent of representation in the human. The image of Narcissus is alive for Narcissus from this fact, insofar as it testifies to this locus, in the paradoxical form of a demand addressed to it. The legend of the veronica has shown the introduction of the divine image in the narcissistic relation, and this introduction operates as a lever. If symbolization is indeed a symbolization of the narcissistic relation – which conserves while surpassing this relation – the problem raised here concerns integrating the mirror in the deployment of the symbolic order, the problem of considering its linguistic nature.
