ABSTRACT

Singing is an important way of interacting musically with young children. For children singing is a natural and enjoyable everyday activity. The most effective practitioners are those who have a passion for what they do, who continually work to develop their skills and knowledge, and who constantly strive to be the best that they can be. In childhood, singing songs is a way to develop, enrich and consolidate a wide range of knowledge and skills, both musical and non-musical. There are many community choirs and choirs for 'non-singers' each with their own genre of music which usually welcome new members. Music education has been a low status area for decades, resulting in a widespread lack of musical knowledge, confidence and skill among much of the adult population. There is countless music resources available to childhood practitioners, knowledge and skills required to use them effectively.
