On the whole the ruins become less interesting as we proceed farther south. Pemba surpassed Zanzibar, and Zanzibar Mafia. The island seems never to have been of great significance, and neither are its ruins, which have been pretty summarily described by Baumann, Voeltzkow and some later visitors.122
