ABSTRACT

Written work is an indispensable component of assessments that you

will be required to undertake when studying for a degree in criminol-

ogy. This chapter commences by discussing the various forms of written

work that you are likely to be asked to undertake whilst a student and

identifies good (and bad) practices when preparing it. An important issue

to be aware of is plagiarism – seeking (perhaps deliberately or maybe

inadvertently) to pass off someone else’s work as your own. You must

avoid doing this and good referencing practices are an essential aspect

of the study skills you must adopt whilst studying for your degree. Very

detailed information is provided later in the chapter regarding how mate-

rial should be cited both in the text of your written work and in the bibli-

ography that should always be presented at the end of your work.
