ABSTRACT

The assessment phase is a complex procedure, taking into account several factors, as we must begin to think creatively when assessing individuals with intellectual disabilities. This chapter focuses on extracting specific theories related to the individual’s information encompassed in the initial phase. Sexual offenders with intellectual disabilities experience unique challenges and problems of reintegration into the community. The Arc’s National Center on Criminal Justice and Disability states that identifying the intellectual disability or learning disability is the first prong in successful risk assessments and psycho-educational programming. Assessment of knowledge and attitudes is also an important part of information gathering to establish a psycho-educational approach to treatment. Cognitive-behavioural therapy has been proven to be a highly successful treatment modality in its effectiveness of treating mental health problems in sexual offenders. The information on the assessment and treatment of individuals with intellectual disabilities who have sexually offended is continuously evolving and growing.
