ABSTRACT
The borderlands at the edge of empire exert a special fascination at moments of historical transformation, and they famously stimulated an author born at the edge of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Joseph Roth (1894–1939). Languages play a special role in these spaces, and translation tells of evolving struggle between empire and nation.
