ABSTRACT

Non-Professional Translation (NPT) has emerged to the forefront of Translation Studies (TS) in recent years. During the last three decades, advances in digital technologies have enabled and fuelled the exponential growth of NPT communities globally, and this symbiotic relationship is the focus of this chapter. It starts with a brief review of main concepts in the area, such as fansubbing, translation crowdsourcing, videogame ROM hacking or activist/humanitarian translations. It then provides a historical overview of NPT practices in relation to the evolution of translation and digital technologies, followed by a more in-depth discussion drawing on some of the most representative examples. The chapter ends with a review of the main research trends and potential emerging directions in this exciting and fast-moving field.
