ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the principal career paths and employment opportunities available in mass media industry. It provides an overview of some of the key issues that undergraduate mass media majors should consider as readers prepare for landing their first jobs and launching their careers after graduation. Through the mass media, citizens of the world develop a better understanding of their society, culture, government and political systems. The innovative technologies that have hurtled us into the Digital Age have simultaneously altered the production, distribution and economics of an entire industry. Writers in the Digital Age are expected to develop content suitable for multiple—and multimedia—platforms, including the Internet. As mass media have entered the Digital Age, the music industry unions have also led the way in seeking and enforcing copyright protection. Mass media companies look more closely at individual portfolios—generally digital or online collections of completed projects that demonstrate a specific skill set or knowledge base.
