ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the limitations of the one-way logic of the detached observer. It describes philosophical arguments that suggest a more realistic understanding of the human condition is one in which people see ourselves as participants in a co-evolutionary process of continuous change. The chapter suggests that any meaningful understanding of design has to recognize the importance of enduring values and those deeper understandings of reality that have shaped human societies for centuries. To respond to the evolving understandings in a generous manner requires a receptive attitude – one open enough and humble enough to recognize the inadequacy of the contemporary worldview. To create more responsible and constructive conceptions of material culture, many of the current assumptions, conventions and dogmas have to be overcome. It is important to ensure that the artefacts that make up the material world are conceived as fitting, positive and potentially enduring contributions to human culture.
