ABSTRACT

University-city interaction in the knowledge society is a complex issue driven by the global networks, the state-market counterbalance, the specific urban development modes and university features. Tensions of university-city interaction exist in the paradigm of the so-called ‘urban’ university along with the strategic localization of universities across places, the conflicts between the stakeholders, and the anxiety about the boundary between the university and other urban institutions. To promote mutually beneficial university-city relations, it calls for measures to align university spatial development with the changing social environment, to establish long-term partnerships between the stakeholders and to keep a systematic perspective on the role of university.
