ABSTRACT

The term " Iraqw cluster " is used to cover the linguistically and otherwise related tribes : Iraqw, Gorowa, Alawa, and Burungi of the Mbulu and Kondoa districts of Tanganyika Territory. These tribes are of unknown ethnic affinities, and in spite of the availability of material it has not yet been possible to classify their languages. Their origins are likewise unknown, but according to tradition they all came to a region called Maangwatai to the south-west of Mount Hanang, from which they split up into their present tribal groups. About 10% of the Iraqw population consists of an element known as Sule, also of unknown origin and affinities.1
